NOTICE: Update regarding issues with paymentsSeveral months ago, customers reported issues with late fees. Athens Utilities immediately began working with PNC Bank to address the issue of the lockbox process and transitioning from mailed payments to digital payments.

  • Update as of Aug. 9. 2022: Electronic payments from customers’ bank draft programs at their respective banks are now accepted by the lockbox that Customer Accounts uses to pay Athens Utilities. Customers should omit the dashes from their account numbers when setting up bank drafts, according to customer accounts manager Regina Rager. The lockbox system will reject the payment if dashes are used in place of only numbers, Rager said. We have found a bug in the system, so we want to make sure that customers know to register for bank drafts without the dashes. Rager stated that Athens Utilities does not charge for this service.
  • Contact Customer Accounts if a customer has a problem with a late payment. The best way is by email at [email protected]. com. Please include name, address and account number on the email.

With a bank draft, the sum due is deducted from the client’s account the day before the due date. There is no fee for this service. Athens Utilities does not have bank account access. Bank draft only authorizes payment of the monthly utility bill.

There may be 28 billing days in some months and up to 32 billing days in others. This is based on when meter readers read the meter. A billing cycle, however, may last up to 36 days due to holidays and more recently because of how COVID has affected employees. The number of billing days is reflected on the bill. The bills with more billing days will be higher.
