There are reports of unanticipated problems brought on by the shelter in place orders and alleged lack of toilet paper as we continue to perform our vital critical infrastructure function of treating millions of gallons of sewage every day.

Customers might be enticed to substitute products like paper towels, baby wipes, or “flushable” wipes. Flushable wipes should never be flushed, despite deceptive labeling, and none of the creative variety of substitute materials should ever be flushed down the toilet.

While DTMA has issues with flushable wipes and any paper products other than toilet paper, our main concern is for our clients and homeowners. Anything other than toilet paper flushed down the toilet has the potential to clog your sewer lateral. The worst case scenario for a homeowner is several thousand dollars in damage and irreparable losses from a flooded basement brought on by the back-up from a blocked lateral. When a lateral blockage does occur, the best case scenario for a homeowner is a several hundred dollar plumber’s bill to unblock your lateral.

Please remember the 3 “P’s when you flush the toilet. The only things that should go down the toilet are pee, poop, and [toilet] paper. It’s not worth the chance of a blocked lateral. Please put all “replacement” items, such as anything marked “flushable wipes,” in the trash.
