Who We Are
The REA Act of 1936, which made loan funds available to any business, government agency, or private cooperative interested in extending service to rural areas, was shortly before the founding of the Jefferson Davis Electric Cooperative (JDEC). The rural group approached the neighborhood power company to request service and urged them to take out an REA loan. They petitioned county agents, civic service organizations, and political leaders to hold large gatherings in order to establish a home-owned and operated non-profit cooperative to provide electricity for their needs after being informed by the power company that Rural Electrification would never be financially or practically feasible.
