About MEC

In 1938, the Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative (MEC) was established by and for its members. Our commitment to providing our member-owners with safe, dependable, affordable, and environmentally responsible electric service while assisting the communities across our service territory has lasted for nearly 80 years.

MEC currently provides service to over 31,000 accounts in portions of five counties in northern North Carolina and nine counties in Southside Virginia. We are a Touchstone Energy Cooperative with our main office in Chase City, Virginia, and district offices in Gretna, Emporia, and Chase City.

MEC has returned nearly $41 million to its member-owners!

You are entitled to margins, also known as the Co-op’s profits, as a member-owner. These are referred to as capital credits, and you will receive a check or a billing credit in return. One advantage of receiving service from a nonprofit utility is this.

Over the past ten years, interest in renewable energy has skyrocketed. As your electric provider, we are dedicated to assisting our Members in evaluating accessible, trustworthy, and secure energy options.

Five $1000 scholarships will be given out each year by Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative to graduating seniors who meet the requirements for the student scholarships and are chosen by the scholarship committee.
