- 21st Century Cures Act FAQs 1. Why is Nuvance Health making these improvements? All healthcare organizations must adhere to the Cures Act by April 5, 2021, according to a federal law. Its objectives are to: strengthen patient-clinician partnerships; improve the patient experience; and provide better care, building on an already-existing commitment to transparency. All patients, regardless of whether they are in a hospital, urgent care facility, or provider practice, will have immediate access to test results and provider notes through their patient portal. Genetic testing results are not subject to these requirements. 3. Health systems will make test results (aside from genetics) and provider notes available to patients through their portal as soon as they become available. 4. The patient portal is accessible to all Nuvance Health patients; what happens if someone doesn’t use it? If a patient does not already have access, they can sign up by visiting the Nuvance Health website. 5. How soon will a doctor’s office get in touch with a patient about results if they aren’t in the hospital? Nuvance Health clinical teams will promptly provide more information about abnormal test results. For an outpatient appointment, this will occur: • Three business days after discharge; • No later than the next day rounds for hospital inpatient encounters; and 6 How soon will a patient’s provider discuss results if they are hospitalized? providers will discuss results and provide updates during their routine daily visits. Patients can ask a member of the care team questions about the information in the portal. Results that a patient receives after the healthcare provider has completed daily rounds will be discussed at the following appointment. 7. With the exception of genetic testing, patients will be informed of the results of their tests as soon as they are available. Patients might view outcomes before their doctor has had a chance to examine them. When test results are abnormal, Nuvance Health will get in touch with patients as soon as possible. 8. Receiving abnormal test results without further explanation can be worrying; why will it take up to two business days for the office to contact a patient if they are not in the hospital? This delay gives us time to review them. Patients can get in touch with the office of their doctor if they have any queries or concerns.
