Beginning this summer, the City of Sterling Heights will stop paying the Great Lakes Water Authority for water and sewer services until the $54 million in unpaid bills from Highland Park have been resolved.
On Tuesday, the Sterling Heights City Council approved a resolution that will stop payments as of July 1. It also takes issue with the higher water and sewer rates brought on by Highland Parks’ over ten-year payment default.
“They are mistreating us and showing no remorse; this has to stop.” ” said Taylor. “You have to ask yourself, ‘How long are you going to take advantage of your neighbors and the communities around you?’ And if that’s the kind of person you are, shame on you; you oughta do the right thing,” the speaker said. “.
Taylor continued, “I don’t understand how this is happening in the open without anyone taking action.”
Several towns in Macomb and Wayne counties have also vowed to protest by refusing to pay all or part of their municipal water bills.
